And the winners were -

On a fine but slightly windy bank holiday Monday, Eriswell Lodge held the first of the 2018 Suffolk CPSA County Championships, the All Round. In total there were 44 shooters from 6 counties in attendance, with 28 being from Suffolk. It was also a good start to the year in terms of Lady and Junior entrants, whereby we had 3 of each shoot in the competition, making the team managers (Dennis Meekings) job a bit easier for team selection again!

Squad 1 went out at 930am, with Stuart Smith setting the bar of 88 for the High Gun and County Title, with Melissa Smith scoring 50 and Henry Lungley scoring 59, setting the pace for the Ladies and Juniors categories respectively.

Squad 2 saw Daren Parsons (83), Chris Morris (84), and Adrian Cook (86) putting in very respectable scores, but Steve Kirby drew level with Stuart on an 88. D Stanford on squad 3 was the third to put in an 88, with John Dyson shooing an 84.

Charlotte Patten carded a 60 on squad 4 to take the lead in the Ladies category, with young Will Page also shooting a 59 in the Juniors on squad 5, putting him level with Henry.

Andy Gibbs shot an 87 on squad 6, with Puff Baker 1 behind on 86, and Spencer Basham shot a 79 to take the lead in the Veterans category.

S Whitelock on squad 7 became the third person to score an 88, with Dave Gooding scoring an 82. And on the last squad of the day, squad 10, Robbie Butters and Neil Bilverstone both shot an 87, which sealed the Veterans category for Neil.

Sadly Will had gone home, so the Junior title went to Henry Lungley without the need for a shoot-off, which would certainly have been a great thing to watch!

The first of the Wednesday evening County shoots at Eriswell Lodge took place on the 6th June, the Single Barrel, and given as it is considered to be one of the minor county shoots it was incredibly well supported, with 44 shooters attending from 3 counties!

Suffolk shooters made up the bulk of the entry with 34, and there were 3 ladies (one Junior) and a colt in attendance, which makes for a promising competition season ahead with interest being shown in the minor championships!

Squad 1 saw Geoff Howlett shoot a solid 46 to set the standard for all others to follow, with Peter Mayhew 4 behind on a 42, whilst H Laflin shot a 37 in Veterans. Squad 2 had Melissa Smith and Henry Lungley shoot a 29 and 18 respectively, with Laura Shinn of Norfolk shooting a 33 and Spencer Basham equalled the Veteran high score with a 37.

Puff Baker and Andy Gibbs shot a 39 and 40 respectively on squad 3, with DJ Reynolds and S Owen shooting a 44 and 45 respectively on squad 4. On squad 5 Robbie Manning lifted the bar in the Veterans category with a solid 42, but Gary Miller on squad 7 bested that by 1 to take the Veterans lead with a 43.

Squad 7 saw Russel Houghton shoot a superb 47, but being a Norfolk shooter was unable to win the Suffolk title. Squad 8 was where you could find several of Suffolk’s big trap shooters, and all 5 of them came in with scores in the 40’s. Alistair Whitehall shot a 45 to take the lead in the Veterans class with only one squad to go, and on squad 9 Norfolk’s Mark Goddard shot a pair of 24’s to take the high gun prize with a 48.

The second of the super six - so named as points towards the supreme county title can be earned - county shoots, English Skeet, took place on Sunday 10th June amidst blue skies and some slightly windy conditions.

The first four squads saw a barrage of scores in the 90’s, with Archie Stannard and John Russell on 97, and Trevor Frammingham and Stuart Smith on 99’s, with Stuart setting the bar for the Suffolk Title, leaving a shoot off needed for the Mike Bradley Memorial Cup should their scores hold. Henry Lungley shot a solid 74 in Juniors, with Melissa Smith shooting an 89 to set the standard in the Ladies.

The next few squads saw Peter Bloomfield shoot a 97 in Veterans, Will Page take the lead in Juniors with a 76, and Puff Baker storm to the top of the leader board with a 100 straight! Albert Taylor of Cambridgeshire shot a 97 on squad 8, whilst Chris Morris and Duane Morley both shot 99’s on squad 9.

Squad 10 was home to some of Suffolk’s top skeet shots; and saw the County Skeet Team Captain Daren Parsons shoot a 97, Robbie Manning 1 better on a 98 in Veterans, and Bernie Polley jumping to the top of the pile in Veterans with a 99. The last squad went out at 2pm, and Henry Bevan carded an impressive 93 to take the Junior Title.

Skeet Doubles - Eriswell Lodge, June 13 2018

The Second of the Wednesday evening County shoots at Eriswell Lodge, the Skeet Doubles, took place on the 13th June amidst grey skies and swirling winds that made life a bit tough at times for some shooters.

A total of 29 shooters took part, with 24 of those being from Suffolk. We have been lucky to see regular competitors in the Ladies and Juniors categories again this year, and from a committee perspective it bodes well for our county team selections going forward!

The first few squads saw scores of 50 straight for Stuart Smith and Andy Gibbs, and 49 for Mike Hermitage, Andy Stephenson and Daren Parsons in the seniors. Melissa Smith shot a 37 and Jess Adams shot a 22 in the ladies, with M Stephenson shooting a 43 and Robbie Manning shooting a 48 in the Veterans.

The second half of the evening saw several scores in the low 40’s come in, with Glen Garnham being the highest scoring senior with a 47. Charlotte Patten shot a great 35 in her first ever Skeet Doubles competition, and Peter Bloomfield shot a 49 to sew up the Veterans Title, whilst young John Porter shot a brilliant 42 to win the Juniors Title!

The final Wednesday evening County shoot at Eriswell Lodge, ABT, took place on the 20th June 2018, and as a glorious summers evening it seemed a fitting end to the evening shoots for the year!

The final Wednesday evening County shoot at Eriswell Lodge, ABT, took place on the 20th June 2018, and as a glorious summers evening it seemed a fitting end to the evening shoots for the year!

40 shooters from Suffolk, Norfolk & Cambridgeshire took part in the event, with 27 being from Suffolk. Early indications were that it would be a slighty testing round with some gusting left to right winds, so a straight would be a challenge!

First squads out saw scores in the 40’s from J Matthewson and Stuart Smith (44), Russel Houghton and S Owen (42), P Houghton (41), and Andy Bowers and Geoff Howlett (40), Whilst Melissa Smith kept her momentum in the County Championships this season with a solid 24.

As the evening went on there were more scores coming in in the 40’s, Peter Mayhew looked set to challenge the top spot but sadly fell away to finish with a very respectable 42, but Barry Randall held his nerve to tie with Stuart on 44 to force a shoot off for the County honours.

Melissa held on to take the Suffolk Ladies title, whilst Jess Adams won her first county title in the Juniors category, and Alistair Whitehall posted a 41 to snatch the Veterans title from Melvyn Stephenson at the last.

Both Stuart and Barry took to the field for a full round of 25 to determine the county championship, with neither shooter dropping a target until their 9th birds. The shoot off was won in the end by Stuart Smith, but with Barry only one target behind it was a very closely fought affair!

The Suffolk Sporting Masters shoot took place at Eriswell Lodge for the first time, and was tied in with the Mel Grassi Memorial Cup (100 Registered Sportrap). It was very well supported as a consequence of the two shoots – with 190 entrants on the sporting and 73 on the Sportrap it turned out to be a great day for prize funds!

The Sporting course produced some great scores early on, but Paul Simpson arrived early too and succeeded in breaking a lot of hearts with a superb 96 – a score that wouldn’t be beaten for the rest of the day, securing him the Suffolk Sporting Masters trophy and title!

Stephen Armstrong put in an 86 to stake his claim to the Veterans title, and young John Porter laid a 67 on the table to set the benchmark for the juniors. As the day progressed there were scores that came close to Pauls 96, but none to beat him, and whilst a valiant effort from Colin Saich put him close to Stephen Armstrong in Veterans he still finished 1 shy on 85.

Melissa Smith and Charlotte Patten continued their competitiveness in the Ladies category, with Melissa taking the title with a 63.

Juniors seemed to have a late flurry at the shoot, with F Calton shooting a 78, which was then beaten by Sam Nunn with a 79, and Tom McGregor shooting a 91 seemed to have it all but sewn up, until Ed Coppen arrived and shot a stunning 93 to snatch it away from Tom at the last!

In the Mel Grassi Memorial Cup, Sam Green and Tom McGregor tied with 96’s each, which resulted in a shoot off between the two of them. After a full round of 25 Sam emerged as the winner, and was presented his trophy by Phil Moss.

Sporting - Highwaymans, 8 July 2018

The Suffolk sporting competition took place at the Highwaymans shooting ground on 8th July. There were 186 entries of which 75 were from Suffolk, and the weather held to give a perfect day for the competition.

A great variety of targets to suit all classes were provided, with stands to support tall and a number of targets across the 12 layouts to test and sort out the champions from the rest! Unfortunately, a major trap breakdown, caused by clays melting and distorting in the heat of the day caused a big delay at stand 12. This caused a number of competitors to hand in a card with the stand missing as the wait unfortunately rose to around 1 hour. The Highwayman team worked furiously in the heat of the day to resolve the situation. Why is it these problems only happen at the more important competitions?

It was sad to see some competitors become impatient and unsporting in their comments to ground staff and officials. It is hoped by the committee that they were not from Suffolk!

Puff Baker, Team Captain, took his responsibilities seriously, arriving at the ground before the competition started, and staying to the very end, making sure of the results, and capturing the best selection for the Inter County team! He also laid down the target with an impressive 89.

Stuart Smith and Melissa from Eriswell Lodge, who have both been achieving success at some of the previous Suffolk Championships, arrived and proceeded to lay down new targets for Senior and Ladies categories with 90 and 54 respectively.

Tom McGregor returned to the clubhouse with an equal high 90 putting the Championship into a liability of shoot off. Tom’s score also setting the target for Junior title.

Colin Saich laid down a score of 87 to set the target for Veteran title.

As the day started to close, with just 40 or so competitors out on the course, efforts were made to contact Stuart to get him back to the ground for what seemed to be an inevitable shoot off. However, the Chapman family had other ideas, coming in with a score of 90 for Pauline taking and retaining the Ladies Champion title, and Eric with a phenomenal 92 to secure Veteran and Senior Champion titles.

The 4th of August saw the very first Suffolk Compak Championship take place at High Lodge on a dry and sunny day. The ground had recently held the “Grand Prix” event and used the electronic audible system on all layouts. After a slight delay at the start whilst some of the referees were getting accustomed to the electronic operation, the event started and any lost time was made up fairly swiftly as the officials and the competitors settled in.

70 entries proved the event would be fiercely contested by those that had shot the discipline before, some only a couple of weeks earlier and those novice to this but many having skills in Sportrap and Sporting to assist with the learning curve. 35 of the competitors were from Suffolk, the others from neighbouring counties and as far afield as Kent, Northamptonshire and Lancashire!

Highest scores of 97 all fell outside the county, but this didn’t deter from an exciting end to the day for Suffolk members.

The Junior Title went to Frederick Calton scoring 93. Tom Massey and Eric Chapman tied on 94 to create a shoot off for the Veterans Title. Pauline Chapman scored 95 take Ladies Champion but Tom Whomes who was not classified showed his fast learning of the discipline by also scoring 95 creating a shoot off for overall champion.

With all 4 competitors lined up for a 25 target shoot off, the money may have been laid down thinking the Chapman family would do the double. However, the bets were lost, as Tom Massey beat Eric for the Veteran Title and Tom Whomes beat Pauline for the County Title so the bet should have been on the Tom’s and not the Chapmans.

A big thank you to all at High Lodge for setting such a great competition and high bar for the first Suffolk Compak Championship and to Tom Whomes for being the first name on the Trophy.
