2023 AGM

On 24th January 2023 the Suffolk CPSA was held at Eriswell Lodge. This was a well attended and very enjoyable evening event and it was great to see so many members there.   We are grateful to Eriswell Lodge for hosting and organising the event so professionally.    And, we are grateful to John Martin (CPSA Chairman) for attending and for giving his report on current CPSA initiatives and progress.

As at all AGM’s, one of the highlights was the “Trophy Presentation” where all Trophies and Keepsakes are presented to all the worthy 2022 Champions. This is always a great moment in the AGM as we saw some of Suffolk CPSA’s competitors rewarded for their efforts and skill in the 2022 season.

After an informative and enjoyable Committee session, there was a break in procedures and Eriswell Lodge laid on an excellent buffet for everyone to enjoy. Once everyone had their  fill, the Committee nominations and elections took place.

In the last section of the AGM  meeting, Darren Parsons and Stuart Smith resigned from their positions as Chairman and Vice Chairman and from the Committee. We thank both for their enormous commitment to the Suffolk CPSA Committee, to it’s members and the the sport.

Nigel Kingston was elected as the new Chairman of Suffolk CPSA and Adrian Cook was elected as Vice Chairman.   Both were already members of the Committee. Nigel and Adrian are both long time supporters of clay target shooting and we look forward to the continued success of Suffolk CPSA under their leadership. Our thanks to Nigel and Adrian for taking up their important roles within the Suffolk CPSA Committee. We wish them every success.

Welcome to the Suffolk CPSA website, here you can find out about all things Suffolk including our upcoming fixtures!

Suffolk has a rich history of clay shooting, and we are always looking for team members to join us and shoot for the county on a regional and national basis. We select teams in four categories; Seniors, Ladies, Juniors and Veterans. In order to shoot for the Suffolk teams please ensure you have entered the championship in that discipline, as these are used as our selection shoots, but if you are still not sure or would like some guidance please contact us. We enter teams in six disciplines; Sporting, English Skeet, FITASC, All Round, DTL and ABT.

In 2018 Suffolk became triumphant regionally and won the ‘East Midlands Directors Trophy’ which they have now won 6 out of the 9 years it has been awarded. An incredible feat, which we hope to continue in the coming years. Our senior team also became the 2018 National All-Round Champions!

This year we added a further 4 county supreme champion titles, which cover the categories of; Veterans, Juniors, Ladies and Colts. During the year we saw 123 different shooters shoot at least one of the super-six championships which count towards this title, which was great to see. This year’s winners were;

Overall Supreme Champion – Stuart Smith

Veteran Supreme Champion – Adrian Cook

Ladies Supreme Champion – Melissa Smith

Junior Supreme Champion – Tom McGregor

Colt Supreme Champion – Henry Lungley

We would also like to congratulate this year’s runners up which were; Overall – Peter Mayhew, Veteran – Robbie Manning, Ladies – Charlotte Patten, Junior – Henry Bevan and Colt – Jasper Pearce.

It was great to see competition within the categories and it would be great to see as many people as possible turn out to compete for these titles in the future. If you have any questions about how this works please feel free to get in contact.

Presidents Cup

Members of Richard ‘Dick’ Hails family receiving the Presidents Cup on his behalf.

At this years AGM we announced the addition of the Presidents Cup, which will be awarded over the coming years for special contributions to Suffolk.

This year we thought it was only right that it be awarded to Richard ‘Dick’ Hails, our previous chairman who we sadly lost in 2019. He was a dedicated official of the county for over 30 years, and his passion for shooting and our county was a huge part of his life and he is incredibly missed.

2020 Raffle Winners

Every year we put all the names who have competed in the super-six shoots into a hat we pick 6 raffle winners who each win 1 free entry into the next years Super Six shoots.

So for every one you enter you get you name popped in once, with a total chance of winning 6 prizes. This years lucky winners were; Barry Lock, Jasper Pearce, Spencer Basham (X2), Peter Mayhew and Alex Smith. You will all receive your raffle voucher soon!

Suffolk well represented at 2020 CPSA  Annual Awards

Huge congratulations our Suffolk members nominated and shortlisted as finalists in this years CPSA Annual Awards. The winners will be announced at the Annual Awards Dinner on the 1st February 2020.

The finalists from our county are:

Fulton (Tosh) McIntosh: Coach of the year

Being nominated for Coach of the Year in 2019 was, to say the least, astonishing, but there are no suitable adjectives that easily come to mind to describe the honour of being nominated yet again this year.

It was busy year for me at Eriswell Lodge, seeing an increase in coaching across the board for shooters at all levels. Instilling confidence is, and always will be, my priority as a coach. There is no better feeling than when you take someone who has never shot before and may have heard horror stories regards recoil through that first tentative shot, or when the more experienced shot who has ‘lost form’, pick up on points that they had never realised were contributing factors to their success/failure. They all just need to be reassured that everything will be fine. Surprisingly to some the world does not come to an end if you miss the occasional target.

We cannot progress without making mistakes, and being in a position where I can interpret these mistakes and turn them into successes is to me what coaching is all about. To keep me busy in my down time from coaching, I re-designed and took over the running of the Suffolk CPSA website, and continued to ‘dabble’ with English Skeet. Although ‘my name is on the tin’ this is not a solo effort and a huge thanks goes to Stuart and the team at Eriswell Lodge for keeping me on the straight and narrow.

Sam Nunn: Disabled Shooter of the Year

This is really unexpected and firstly want to congratulate young Reuben Welch & Paul Bailey on their nominations also. I have had  really mixed year in shooting with some really big high’s including Bronze at the BO ESP at High Lodge & Silver at the EO ESP at Hodnet and the highlights being BO ESK at Dartford winning my sixth consecutive GOLD at that event which has not been done in any disabled discipline or category that I am aware of. In addition to my CPSA gongs this year I was runner up in the Sporting and DTL title’s & have won the DSG Skeet title. The DSG events are so rewarding and it has been great to be able to see some new faces a go at our events and also at the major CPSA competitions.

Thank you to everyone who nominated me in the last round of voting and would really appreciate your continued support if you feel I deserve it.

High Lodge Leisure: Club / Ground of the Year

A Family Business since 1982, owner John Bidwell and his daughters/Directors Helen & Jane and her husband Andrew are delighted to see High Lodge as a finalist for this award.

It's been a busy year and we have thoroughly enjoyed and are very proud to have hosted one of the annual prestigious events in the shooting calendar, The CPSA British Open English Sporting & Sportrap Championships was a highlight for us and provided us with the opportunity to showcase the facilities, design a varied course on a new area of the ground and we welcomed & thank the 1400 shooters who came to our venue. In addition, we hosted an international event 'The British Grand Prix Compak' that utilised the all automated a voice activated layouts and saw several international visitors taking part.

We have strong values of always aspiring to provide the best facilitates for our customers continuing to re-invest in the sport with new equipment and infrastructure that has provided Clay Shooters with state of the art layouts for 'Compak Sporting', undercover shooting stands, modern clubhouse, accommodation and very soon to update all of our sporting counter system to the modern card systems.

Recently being awarded 'Business of the Year award for 2019' in Suffolk & Waveney, winning this award would mean so much to the family and the whole team who work hard to provide an attentive service going the extra mile for our customers, making sure you all enjoy the experience and your Leisure time that you spend with us. Thank you and we value your vote.

John Bidwell and Andy Coppen: Recognition Award for Course Setters

As Father-in-law & Son-in-law, we are delighted and would like to thank you for being nominated for this Award.

John's experience of setting targets for well over 50 years for many English and British Opens, FITASC Selection Shoots, CLA Game Fairs, and the FITASC European Championship in 1990 compliment Andrew's love the sport built over the past 15 + years and over the past 4 years joining the family business on a full-time basis, shooting internationally gaining fresh ideas & skills required to put on enjoyable shoots.

Together and independently we have set course targets on regular events at High Lodge making sure our experiences are brought to the ground and particularly the new Compak & Sportrap competitions & host to the 'UK GP Compak Championships' which Andrew has built a reputation amongst shooters for putting on excellent shoots.

The highlight of our work together for 2019 was setting The CPSA British Open Sporting and Sportrap Championships, coming up with the right combinations of targets for everyone to enjoy.  Resulting in one of the best British Opens ever according to what participants told us as the feedback we received.  The main ingredient for building a great sporting course in our view is speed and angle with the majority of targets thrown within a shooters "comfort zone".

Thanks goes to all our customers that support our events and all competitors who enjoyed the major Championships we hosted this year, thanks for your vote.  Being the first family duo to be nominated for this award, it would be a great honour and privilege to receive this recognition.

REMEMBER - your vote counts - to register you votes go to...

Henry also came home with the Junior Individual award! They are both showing great promise for what should be an exciting future in shooting! Also - thank you to Nottingham Gun Club for hosting the event.

Dick Hails - very sad news...

It is with great sadness that on Friday June 7th 2019 we lost our president, chairman, committee member and friend Richard 'Dick' Hails.

Dick meant so much to so many within Suffolk, his passion for this sport was always paramount and it could easily be seen by all. He spent countless years representing and working for our sport within Suffolk and regionally within the East Midlands.

A true gentleman, who was so kind and warming to those he met. He found ways to instill a love for shooting in others, whether they already shot or were new to the sport he would take them under his wing. Our love and thoughts go to his family and friends at this very sad time.

The 'one and only' Adrian Last with his well deserved 'Service to the County' Award.

Rest In Peace Dick.

Congratulations to the lovely Adrian Last, who this year was honoured to receive a ‘Service to the Region’ award by the East Midlands Regional Committee for his ongoing service to shooting in the region. I am sure you will all know of Adrian as he is a regular face at many of our county fixtures and local shoots, so please join us in congratulating him on his achievements! He has previously won numerous other awards including ‘Suffolk Sports Personality of the Year’ at the Suffolk Sports Awards so this is another brilliant one for him to add to his collection!

This years supreme title has been retained for the second year on the bounce by Stuart Smith who scored a whopping 57 out of 60 possible points. In second place was Chris 'Puff' Baker on 33 and in third was Andy Gibbs on 25. ABOVE: 2018 Suffolk Supreme Champion, Stuart Smith being presented with the trophy by New Chairman Daren Parsons.

So how do I become Supreme Champion?

Every year the Suffolk CPSA award the highest scoring shooter from across six disciplines. In 2019 Supreme titles were also added alongside the Overall Supreme title for the Ladies, Junior, Colt and Veterans categories. Disciplines that count towards the title are;

Sporting    English Skeet    FITASC    ABT    DTL    All Round

10 points will be awarded to the 1st place shooter in each category at each shoot, 9 points to 2nd and so on until 1 point is reached which is awarded to all of those who shot the shoot. You must be a CPSA member in Suffolk County to qualify, and you can earn points across multiple categories (e.g. Colts and Ladies) however you will only be able to win one title.

Supreme Awards will be calculated and then handed out at the Suffolk AGM. There is also County Badges available across these disciplines for the High Gun in Overall, Ladies, Juniors and Veterans which will also be awarded at the AGM.
